After unfortunate reports of some Switch owners having their systems bricked due to using a third-party dock after the recent 5.0 firmware update, it looks like the update has caused problems with even more Switch accessories like third-party LAN adapters.
The seemingly first reports of third-party LAN adapters failing after the update come from Japan. It’s unclear if this problem only applies to certain third-party LAN adapters from Japanese companies or if it also affects a wider range of adapters from all over.
So, why has this update been causing so much havoc?
The 5.0 firmware update brought a few minor changes and improvements to the Switch OS on the surface, but the real changes lie deep within the code of the system. Data miners and hackers have found that Nintendo has made some serious security updates to the Switch’s coding. This has stopped hackers dead in their tracks. Of course, that’s good news, but it looks like these changes have completely messed up the compatibility of several third-party accessories. This suggests that Nintendo didn’t notify the various companies about these changes beforehand, but that can’t be said for sure. In any case, your best bet is to stick with officially-licensed accessories for the time being until all of these issues are sorted out.
