Allegedly some hackers, sifting through Mario Kart 8‘s code have stumbled across four unused Cup icons. As seen in the picture below there are cup icons for a Yoshi Egg, a Shine, a Boo and scorn of every one who’s ever taken part in a Mario Kart race, the dreaded Blue Shell.
In Super Mario Kart on the SNES, Mario Kart 64 on the N64, Mario Kart Double Dash on the Gamecube there were only four cups; Mushroom, Flower, Star and the Special Cup. The same cups appear in Mario Kart Wii, Mario Kart DS and Mario Kart 7 on the 3DS but with the addition of Shell Banana, Leaf & Lightning cups representing the retro tracks. Mario Kart Super Circuit on the GBA was the only noticeable exception to this basic rule which has five cups including Mushroom, Flower, Lightning, Star and Special cups.
If Nintendo were looking to completely shake up the standard roster of cup icons, these icons are somewhat mismatched as only one of them is an item currently used in the Mario Kart series, another is an actual character that appears throughout the Mario Universe, as does the Yoshi egg. The Shine of course made it’s debut in the GameCube’s Super Mario Sunshine. The most popular theory put forward so far is that these could represent future as yet unannounced DLC – Nintendo has so far revealed that an update is due on August 27th which adds Mercedes Benz themed vehicles.
