The following rumor has emerged after some clever detective-like folks took a look at the recent 3DS firmware update 8.0.0.18. According to the rumor the new piece of hardware is packing some serious wallop compared to the current model. Considering that this new machine is capable of running the epic-in-scale Xenoblade Chronicles it comes as to surprise to see these kinds of numbers.

Based on disassembly of certain sysmodules for code added/changed with in the 8.0.0-18 update, it appears that the “New 3DS” has the following changes:

They extended FCRAM from 128MB to 256MB.
They added another VRAM (?) of 4MB.

The New 3DS also packs some other welcome additions in the form of slightly larger screens, and switchable cover plates. The ABXY buttons are now different colors, a homage to the Super Famicom controller button colors. The New 3DS XL has black buttons with the letters written out in different colors as well. So far, the models only have a 2014 release in Japan. Europe will not see the new systems until 2015 at the earliest and this likely is the same for everyone else.
