PlayStation 4 launches to similar Wii U numbers in Japan

Japan Console Launches

PlayStation 4 (¥41.979 / ¥46.179) launched in Japan just three days ago and the results for how it performed during its first two days are in. Of course, this isn’t about how well the PlayStation 4 has performed, but how how well it has performed in comparison to past platforms.

Here are a list of past platform Japan launches according to Media Create:

  • 1998.11.27 [Sega Dreamcast] (¥29.800) – 101.490 (3 days)
  • 2000.03.04 [Sony PlayStation 2] (¥39.800) – 630.552 (2 days)
  • 2001.09.14 [Nintendo GameCube] (¥25.000) – 133.719 (3 days)

  • 2011.12.17 [PlayStation Vita] (¥24,980) - 324.859 (2 days)
  • 2012.12.08 [Nintendo Wii U] (¥26.250 / ¥31.500) – 308.142 (2 days)
  • 2014.02.22 [Sony PlayStation 4] (¥41.979 / ¥46.179)- 322.083 (2 days)

In the following week, Wii U would go on to sell 126,916, so it’ll be interesting to see if PS4′s momentum continues to match that of the Wii U or not. For now, congrats to Sony for what I hope they consider a successful Japan launch. Xbox One will launch in Japan later this year.
