Online success shows promise for upcoming games.

More information is flowing out of the Investors Meeting, with Iwata showcasing the success of Nintendo\’s online functionality for the Wii U and 3DS.

Highlights of Iwata\’s comments include the following:

  • Online sales have tripled in last 2 years
  • eShop awareness has reached a point where gamers use it as a source of video information
  • We started download sales of packaged software, which expanded our digital business
  • We have expanded our range of payment methods, including POSA cards available in retail stores

With the continued success of the eShop and indie-friendly business structure, the shift from retail to digital games may see a sharp growth on Nintendo platforms, especially with tools such as Unity and Construct 2 being easily used on the Wii U. Do you see a strong emphasis on Nintendo platforms featuring online features? Let us know in the comments.
