July was going to be a curious month for Nintendo, as this and August were going to be the final two quieter months for the company before the onslaught of titles for the rest of 2014 for both the Wii U and the 3DS. The success of Mario Kart 8 shows that Nintendo is attaining sustainable momentum according to the latest NPD numbers and press release for the company.

Mario Kart 8 has now sold over 1 million copies in the US alone, which is the second title on the system to do that along with New Super Mario Bros. U. Mario Kart 8 was also the 5th selling overall SKU of the month of July, and was the only non-cross platform released title to break the top 10.

Nintendo also reported that Wii U hardware sales are up 60% from the January 1st til July 30th over last years sales figures, and that software was up 135% over the same time period. No sales figures or indications were given for the 3DS.

With Hyrule Warriors, Bayonetta 2, Smash Bros., and Captain Toad Treasure Tracking lurking in the next coming months, the Wii U should achieve some more sustainable and growth related success and hopefully bolster it’s place as the second highest selling console on the market, with eyes set on first place.
