Fear not, Star Fox fans! The Great Fox returns to the Super Smash Bros. series and you’ll be able to topple your opponents on its exterior when Super Smash Bros. for Wii U hits shelves this holiday season.

“Pic of the day. Here’s the Great Fox from Star Fox: Assault. I wonder what missions it will conduct. It’ll probably have fighters running around on top of it without the pilot’s consent.”

Without explicitly stating it, the caption all but confirms that the Great Fox will be the site of a Smash Bros. stage once again. In Super Smash Bros. on the N64, fighters can duke it out on Sector Z, the largest stage in that game and considered one of the largest stages in the entire series. Just like in this screenshot, the ship is traveling in deep space with Arwings along for the ride. The stage returned, albeit shrunken down heavily, as Corneria in Super Smash Bros. Melee and this version would also appear unchanged in its appearance on the Wii in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Arwings show up frequently in both versions to assault players with their laser cannon attacks. According to the screenshot, it seems like they’ll be back once again to cause trouble.

It’s interesting that Sakurai makes a point of this being the Great Fox from Star Fox: Assault. Could this be hinting at more Assault assets appearing in the game? We can see that Sakurai is giving love to entire series rather than focusing on the latest releases in a particular franchise. We can see this in characters like Pac-Man, who’s visual design is inspired by his Pac-Land appearance.

Star Fox was notable in that it did not get a news stage on the Great Fox in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. While Corneria was brought back as part of the Melee stage selection, Lylat Cruise featured a layout on top of an odd ship with a few platforms. The Great Fox did appear, but only in the stage’s chaotic background.

Sound off in the comments below with your thoughts on this new stage. Do you think it will be the return of Sector Z or a possible visual update for Corneria, or a new stage entirely? Anything is possible with Sakurai!
