Gaijin Games: Miiverse Story Time #6

Gaijin Games takes their connection with fans on Miiverse seriously.  So seriously, in fact, that they ask their community to come up with and vote on story elements that will be included in the weekly Miiverse Storytime with CommanderVideo.  They are now on their sixth week and still going hilariously strong with zany and strange story suggestions that are packed into their weekly address on YouTube.

Wii U Sponsors ITV4′s Tour de France 2013 Live Coverage

With Nintendo looking to significantly increase the sales of its hardware this Holiday and throughout 2014, it’s no wonder they’ve arranged the Wii U as being an official sponsor for the Tour de France 2013, more noticeably via ITV4′s coverage of the yearly cycling event, which supposedly captivates an audience of 3.5 billion people.

ITV4 and British Eurosport are the sole providers of live coverage of the event, which starts Saturday 29th June and ends Sunday 21st July 2013 so it’s likely that the Wii U will get a good amount of recognition.

More Game Gear Titles on Nintendo 3DS eShop: Sonic Labyrinth, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 & Crystal Warriors!

It’s really a good time to own a 3DS, not only because of its great retail releases, but also because of the upcoming Virtual Console titles.

If you want to go back to the nostalgic “Game Gear-era”, you will soon get the chance to enjoy three new VC releases on Nintendo’s portable console.

We’re happy to present another three Game Gear titles available for the Nintendo 3DS eShop: Sonic LabyrinthSonic the Hedgehog 2, and Crystal Warriors!

And just so it doesn’t get buried in these write-ups, I want to point out that Crystal Warriors features a bonus feature for the 3DS of local multiplayer! Now, on to the pondering.

Writing these posts for the recent influx of Game  Gear titles into the 3DS shop has been an unexpected lesson in the uniqueness of portable systems: because they could never sell themselves as being technically superior to their console counterparts, they have often — from the Game Boy and Game Gear to the PlayStation Portable and the Nintendo DS in all its incarnations — been homes for unique games and unique takes on genres and franchises.

It makes it easy to relive these titles, both as little lessons in the experimental history of gaming, and as delightful games to be explored in their own right.

Region Locking is Here to Stay

It seems that with the era of the parental controls and on-disc data for games ratings region locking is going to be a feature of all Nintendo systems.

“Nintendo has no plans to remove region locking from our systems. By taking this approach, Nintendo is able to include parental controls and ensure compliance with regional standards and rating systems.”

While there may be a way around this through firmware, no doubt it would include a lot of code to make up for this.  A system that can read the games information and either do a comparative to local standards or look-up the games ratings through an internet connected device to get the relevant regions rating would require a lot of coding, and in essence slow down a system significantly.

Nintendo have always been the company to put parental frame of mind at the forefront, they take their corporate social responsibility seriously.  They want their systems to be available for anyone and everyone, but they aren’t willing to leave it in a state that their responsibilities to parents go wayward.  They respect the right for anyone to have any content they wish but also want parents to have the tools to filter content they don’t deem to be appropriate for their children.

Which is why they feel that region locking, no matter how unpopular, is a necessity on their devices.

Wii U eShop Early Adoption Incentive Outed In Latest Chotto Direct

In today’s Japanese Nintendo Direct, Iwata-San detailed an early adoption program that will amount to a 10% discount on specific games during their first week after release.

Pikmin3, Lego City Undercover, and The Wonderful101 will all see a 10% price drop on the eShop during their first week at retail beginning July 13th, July 24th, and August 24th, respectively.

This is a bold move on Nintendo’s part to boost digital sales of games, considering they are famous for price locking their games at full retail for very long periods of time.  A 10% discount for early buyers of digital copies will certainly boost sales in that end of the business and coincides quite nicely with NPD announcing recently that they will begin to provide digital sales numbers this year.

Whether this incentive or future incentives spur hardware sales remains to be seen, but every little bit helps.  What we can gather from this is that Nintendo is making all of the right moves to nudge consumers into a full digital sales model, rather than resorting to brute force tactics and pestering pre-purchase predictions.

‘Project Sweat’ Starts Campaign, Wii U Stretch Goal Set at £45k

Project Sweat is the lastest indie title to start a Kickstarter campaign in order to raise funds. The game is a 2D action-RPG which hopes to blend an “addictive, challenging and fast-paced combat system in a seamless multi-layered environment”.

Developed in London, by Humid Games, the initial funding goal is set at £25,000, with a stretch goal for Wii U, PSV, PS3 and PS4 set at £45,000. For more information on the game, check out the trailer below…

Nintendo Investor Brief Translation And Analysis

The following is a fan translation of the Nintendo Investor Meeting.  Translation was done by twitter user Cheesemeister3k.  Some of the questions we don’t have the translated answers for, when we do get them we will update this space.  There were some very interesting nuggets of information that came out of this investor meeting.

Namely, Nintendo intentionally held back announcements for games being released in 2014 both because there was “too much information” to reveal at e3, and they want to avoid revealing new types of games and give their competitors the ability to copy before Nintendo is able to ship.

Also interesting was that the lack of online coop play in Super Mario 3D World was a calculated move to allow the team to focus on polishing the mechanics and providing great local multiplayer.  Games that they feel have a place with online play will be developed with that in mind.  Further, they plan to continually add functionality to Miiverse, including the ability to upload play data so that others can play against you while you aren’t playing (similar to the idea expressed in the Forza 5 “driveatar” coincidentally).

Without further adieu:

Q1 is about lack of innovation on new consoles.

A1: New consoles have always produced better graphics, but the work required may not be related to customer satisfaction.  Looking for ways to surprise customers in other ways than just creating pretty graphics. Iwata passed to Miyamoto to talk about Pikmin 3.

Miyamoto: We made Pikmin 3 with all of our effort. Beginners and fans alike can play. Game industry change comparable to manga –> anime.  Nintendo’s accused of having the same series again at E3, but that’s because they’re character-centered, which is a strength.  You don’t have to start by creating new characters in order to present new ways to play or new ways to use media.

Q2 is about how new controls will be done.

Q3: Virtual Boy on 3DS VC?

A3: New product announcements aren’t made at an investor’s Q&A. VB didn’t go well, but some liked its uniqueness.

Q4 requests more mini-games like StreetPass DLC, Wii Play: Motion.

Q5 is about Iwata’s “commitment” reported as implication of resignation.

Q6: Wii U support.

A6: There are few 3rd-party titles announced for Wii U, as was said. More support soon would be good, 2 things to do.  First: release 1st-party titles one after another starting next month will revitalize the Wii U. Second: make hits out of 3rd-party titles.There are more unannounced Wii U titles coming by 2014. There was more info than could be released at E3. Nintendo Wanted to ease owners’ fears.  Don’t want to leave a long gap between announcement/release of new game types that would lessen the impact or allow competitors to copy.  Nintendo has the job of both introducing video games to people who’ve never played before as well as satisfying existing fans.

Q7: lawsuit loss.

A7: case not settled, but getting numbers ready in case payment ordered. Nintendo appealing 3/13 NY award of $30.2m.  Nintendo expects to win the patent case with Tomita Technology on appeal. In that case, the loss booked now will be re-applied as profit.

Q8 asks about the global strategy in terms of an aging population, language learning.

Q9 asks about Vitality Sensor, cafeteria food quality.

Q10 suggests a restructuring to cope with higher costs relative to similar sales to the year 2000 and post a profit.

Q11 on Web Framework.

Q12: network policy.

A12: Many ways to use networking, including online play, which requires being on at the same time. Miiverse shares exp.  With further development, you’ll be able to send your play data to #Miiverse for others to download and play against at a different time.  This sort of feature will vary depending on network usage. NSMBU dev. efforts spent on tuning local multiplayer, Miiverse for strategy.  Mario Kart and Smash Bros. will have online play to meet customers’ demands. Miiverse to enjoy games together at different times…to feel moved by others’ play experiences, and to move others with your own experiences. Networking to be used to best match the game.

Q13 wants new leisure products beyond games/cards, stock owner gifts.

Q14 asks about dealing with misreporting by the media.

A14: Iwata: Some media reports have, w/o asking or referring to official announcements, w/o confirming…and reporting as if announced — that is, taking some of my words out of context and rewriting them to amplify animosity and reporting…as if I had said it. So when considering media influence and the content of reports and whether they’d be misread, it may be refuted. So when ignoring such a report would be a big minus, I may actively respond. I cannot control information flow on the Internet. Because there may always be some very unfortunate or regrettable information transmitted, refuting would only help to spread it. Iwata: I take great care in deciding how to respond so as not to upset stock holders. Nintendo Direct is most-watched not on PC, but eShop. In that way there can be a direct channel to customers. By distributing info reliably, even if there are bad reports, not as big a problem.

Q15 is about offering help to 3rd-parties with the 3D display feature on 3DS.

A15: Gained lots of know-how on how much to separate eyes’ perspectives and put little stress on the eyes. How successful software has done this is shared both within the company and with other companies when asked. No tool to indicate 3D limit…It’s up to humans to tell what the limit is for 3D volume. Player experience varies depending on the place. Some like low vol., others high. 3D volume adjustable in games, but fixed in downloaded trailers. The non-adjustable volume may not be fulfilling. Up to dev, but supporting.

Q16 asks if there’ll be a stock split to keep it in reach of individual investors after new rules take effect in January.

[UPDATE] Atlus “Not Affected” By Parent Corp Financial Woes

We reported earlier that Index Corp, the parent company of Atlus, was filing for civil restructuring due to financial issues.  Apparently Index is working to insulate Atlus themselves from feeling the effects of the effort.  When Kotaku reached out to Atlus for comment, they had the following to say.

Currently, Index Digital Media, Inc. and the ATLUS brand are unaffected by the Index Corporation proceedings in Japan. We’re carrying on day-to-day activities, business as usual. Shin Megami Tensei IV and Dragon’s Crown are still releasing on July 16 and August 6 respectively, and we’re licensing and publishing third-party titles such as R.I.P.D: The Game and Daylight. We want to thank all of our fans for their outpouring of support.

This after the Japanese twitter account for Atlus reassured followers that they still planned to maintain their software release schedule.  So far it seems that the crisis has been averted for the time being.

What are your thoughts on their comments?  I’m sure many Nintendo Enthusiasts would like to see Atlus absorbed into Nintendo, or contracted as a second party developer, they have an amazing lineup of IP that would fit well with the Nintendo fan base.

Flipnote Studio 3D To Be Delayed in Japan

One of the largest issues plaguing Nintendo over the last couple of years, to include software releases for both the 3DS and the Wii U, has been the consistent delays pushing anticipated software back months at a time.

Nintendo are continuing the trend by announcing today that Flipnote Studio 3D is being slightly delayed.  The release date has been pushed back for Japanese customers 21 days from July 3rd to July 24th.

The notice is in Japanese, and translates roughly to:

Thank you for your continued patronage of our products.  This is to inform you that the community service “Flipnote Studio 3D”, which had been scheduled for delivery on July 3, 2013, has been delayed to July 24, 2013.

We apologize for any inconvenience caused to customers waiting for delivery,  and we apologize sincerely as well as thank you and ask for your continued understanding.

Still no word on release dates for other regions eagerly awaiting the release of this software, but it is possible they are being internally delayed as well.  It is still expected to drop this summer.

Armikrog Hits Wii U Stretch Goal!

UPDATE: It’s exceeded $950,000 with over an hour to go. Armikrog is coming to Wii U in 2014!

Armikrog is just seven hours away from the end of it’s funding campaign. Last night it managed to cross the $900,000 mark which means the game will be made. However, there is still a bit more to go to make sure 100% this game comes to the Wii U. Pencil Test Studios are asking for an extra $50,000 for the Wii U version which will feature exclusive content, and at time of writiting they just need a little over $16,000.

Miiverse Post Character Limit Increased To 200

As reported by many users on the internet as and after doing a self-check, it seems as if Miiverse users are now able to post up to 200 characters instead of the original 100. This should undoubtedly  allow Wii U console owners to express themselves without having to create (as many) multiple follow up comments.

Hot on the heels of last week’s fantastic petition for Guilty Gear Xrd Sign for the Wii U which is now nearing 7000 signatures, comes this new petition for the Tales of Symphonia remake.

Reader Daniel Carvalho from Brazil has created this new petition to let Namco Bandai know just how much we, as Nintendo gamers, want to see Tales of Symphonia land on the Wii U. It’s currently being remade for the PS3, with extra content added, but was originally released on the GameCube where it became the series best selling instalment to date!
