Nintendo owns quite a number of IPs, but a lot of them haven’t been touched in several years. One of these dormant franchises is none other than Wave Race. The last release was Wave Race: Blue Storm, which came out all the way back in 2001. That was a whopping 17 years ago!
Seeing that it’s been so long since the last release, it’s only natural to think that Nintendo has all but given up on the franchise. But, it turns out that this might not actually be the case.
At the recent BAFTA awards ceremony, the folks over at Fandom were able to catch up with Nintendo’s very own Shinya Takahashi. Mr. Takahashi is the General Manager of Entertainment Planning. He was also the Director of Wave Race 64 and the Project Lead for Wave Race: Blue Storm, so it’s no wonder why Fandom reached out to him to ask if a new Wave Race has any chance of being made. So, what was Takahashi’s answer? A rather encouraging one.
Mr. Takahashi simply responded:
“You may see that game again. We have been trying to make many games and that may be one of them … I personally love Wave Race!”
That’s quite the tease! With E3 a little less than two months away at this point, perhaps an announcement could be in the works? We’ll only have to wait and see.
