The Nintendo Switch launched worldwide back on March 3rd, and it’s been a big hit in market after market. But, there’s one market that’s been notoriously difficult for Nintendo to perform in—the UK region. The company has had a hard time there for quite a number of years now, but the Switch has been holding its own. Still, it has a long way to go.
GamesIndustry has put together a very nice infographic which shows off different gaming statistics for 2017. One of those statistics are the sales of games in the UK according to each platform. The numbers were spread across both last and current-gen systems. In terms of Nintendo hardware, the Switch unsurprisingly accounted for the highest percentage of the share, coming in at 7.5%. 3DS accounted for 5.3% and Wii U made up less than a full percentage (0.9%). When you compare these numbers to that of the PS4 and Xbox One, it’s clear to see how hard of time Nintendo has in this market. The PS4 took the biggest share out of all platforms at a whopping 50.2%. The Xbox One came in at 31.6%.
Of course, the Switch is still a relatively new platform. At this time, it’s only a little over nine months old. This number should surely increase by this same time next year. The biggest challenge facing the Switch is getting more third-party support. We’ll have to wait and see what announcements 2018 brings.
