In its first year on the market, the Nintendo Switch has managed to amass a respectable lineup of excellent games, especially on the eShop where indie developers are currently thriving. Unfortunately, several factors keep many great indie games stuck to the eShop and unable to reach retail sales floors. While digital is fine, it doesn’t beat having a tangible copy you can hold and display on your shelf. Limited Run Games, a company that specializes in producing small physical print runs for retail games, has thankfully announced they’ll be releasing Switch games in 2018. While nothing has currently been announced so far, I’ve come up with a list of five games I want to see get a physical release.
Sidebar game’s Unique 2D Golf RPG is one of the best and most surprising adventures you can have on the Nintendo Switch. You play as a Golfer who is given one last shot at achieving his dreams, and to do this you must navigate eight environments filled with various challenges and secrets. It features an engrossing story like any good RPG, hence the title. It’s a shame then that there’s no physical copy available to purchase. Golf Story deserves a full physical release with gorgeous box-art and manual to read and admire. It’s a game that belongs to sit on a shelf beside Zelda and Splatoon.
Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap
This addictive action side-scroller is about a cursed adventurer searching for a cure and to stop the evil Meka-Dragon. One great feature is that you can choose to be either a male or a female adventurer. You can also switch the graphics style from modern to classic at any time during the game. Wonder Boy is easily one of the best action games released this year, so it’d be great to have it as a physical copy.
Described by its creator’s as a Rhythm Violence game, Thumper is a psychedelic acid trip of a rhythm game that manages to be haunting while providing challenging thrills. The premise is simple; you are a space Beetle, you must kill CRAKHED. To do so, you cruise along a track at high speeds timing button presses to the excellent soundtrack to avoid obstacles and defeat your foes. Thumper is easily one of a unique gaming experiences available and deserves the physical treatment.
SteamWorld Dig 2
The sequel to the hit Wii U and 3DS game, SteamWorld Dig is a total treat for fans of the Metroidvania style genre. Featuring a large underground world to explore full of traps and secrets galore, SteamWorld dig 2 satisfies the craving for adventure. Unfortunately, it leaves me craving a physical copy that I can carry with me and loan to friends so they can experience the joy of SteamWorld Dig 2 as well.
Hopefully, this game is on Limited Run Game’s list also.
A farming sim in the vein of Harvest Moon, Stardew Valley scratches that itch for a fun and relaxing but addictive game that’s made even better by the portable nature of the Switch. The game’s premise is you’ve inherited your Grandfather’s farm which unfortunately the farm and the Valley itself are in complete shambles. So it’s your job to return both to glory. Speaking of glory, how glorious would it be if Stardew Valley received a physical release? I’d say very glorious indeed.
