Nintendo has been involved in the gaming industry for over three decades at this point. The company has contributed a lot to the industry over the years. One thing that makes Nintendo stand out from its competitors is its unique nature. Nintendo has always preferred to do things its own way, and this behaviour has only increased over the generations. The heat was really turned up with the release of the Wii and DS, which were very different than the other systems. Nintendo has continued to take this more ‘creative’ approach with its systems ever since.
So, why does Nintendo take this approach? That question was answered by Nintendo of America’s President, Reggie Fils-Aime during a recent interview with Mashable.
“We’re constantly looking to disrupt the industry. We’re constantly asking ourselves what
can we do that’s differentiated, that the consumer wants but doesn’t know they want.”
That comment makes sense when you consider how the designs of Nintendo’s last few systems wowed the crowd. The dual-screens of the DS, the motion controls of the Wii and now the home console x handheld functionality of the Switch; these are all things that weren’t explicitly asked for. Nintendo just decided to go ahead and do it. Sony and Microsoft have had one idea in mind since they birthed their first systems: keep pushing the boundaries of power. That core idea obviously hasn’t changed today. Rather, it’s being pushed now more than ever with the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X—the ‘premium’, 4K-ready upgrades to the original PS4 and Xbox One.
While the other two keep trying to 1UP each other by creating the next most powerful system, Nintendo seems quite content with just trying new ideas and giving players different experiences on a hardware level. I’m glad that at least one company has this approach; we already have two copycats, so three would have been too many. While Nintendo actually does get a lot of flack for being different, you’ve got to hand it to the company—it sticks to its guns no matter what. The Switch has been a big hit worldwide since it released back in March, so this creative approach must be doing something right.
