Nintendo has been involved in gaming for over 30 years now, but the company itself has existed for a much longer period of time. Nintendo was first established in 1889 on September 23rd. That means Nintendo is now 128 years old! To really drive this point home, Nintendo has been existence longer than any human that’s currently alive. That’s kind of a morbid thought….Time to lighten things up a bit.
The company has had a variety of business ventures, first starting with making Japanese hanafuda playing cards. Beyond that, Nintendo was also a toy company, had its own TV network, taxi service, and even dabbled in food manufacturing. These are just to name a few.
After Nintendo got into the gaming business, it basically became an almost completely game-focused company; but it’s still kept some of its old ventures like toy and hanafuda card production. I’m glad Nintendo became a game company, because it’s actually responsible for turning me into a gamer!
My earliest gaming-related memory is from when I was about 3-years old, playing a Nintendo 64 which belonged to one of my mom’s old coworkers that he used to bring to the office. He’d let me play whenever my mom brought me to work with her. I then moved onto PCs when I got older, but ended up getting pulled back into consoles when I was 13 thanks to the Wii. It was actually the first console I ever owned. The first system I bought with my own money was a 3DS about two years ago. Now, my goal is to buy a Switch (if I can find one!)
So, Nintendo has definitely made up a big part of my gaming life. While I love gaming as a whole, I have to admit that I’m just a bit biased towards Nintendo.
