Video games have gone from something as simple as a game of Pong, which consists of 2 lines and a square block, to complete narratives that can often rival the best Hollywood script. As with any form of entertainment there are different types ranging from gung-ho action games with little plot, to social, economic, and political statements being made within these games. Nintendo usually steers clear of heavy-story games, but things like the Legend of Zelda and Metroid do come with a certain level of depth in terms of story progression.
In a recent interview with Reggie Fils-Aime, he spoke about Nintendo’s stance on political elements within their games:
Making political statements are for other people to do. We want people to smile and have fun when they play our games.
Don’t expect to hear Mario preaching about political elements in Super Mario Odyssey!
