PDP Partners with Nintendo to Release GameCube Controller-Inspired Pad for Wii U in Time for Smash Bros.

written by Omar T May 21, 2014

The leading third-party manufacturer of video game accessories to release a line of Nintendo GameCube inspired controllers for Wii U, aligning with the release of Super Smash Bros. for Wii U

Performance Designed Products has announced that they are partnering with Nintendo to develop the Wired Fight Pad, a new line of Classic Controller inspired by the original Nintendo GameCube Controller.

The Wired Fight Pad is licensed by Nintendo and designed for use with the Wii and Wii U consoles. The Wired Fight Pad plugs directly into the Wii Remote External Extension Connector. Players can use it for Wii and Wii U games that support the Classic Controller, the Classic Controller Pro, as well as some of Nintendo’s Virtual Console games.

The Wired Fight Pad will feature fan-favorite Nintendo characters such as Mario, Yoshi, and Princess Peach with a shape inspired by the original Nintendo GameCube Controller.

The Wired Fight Pad will be available at game launch at your local video game retailer this holiday season for $24.99.

Here\’s the controller they created for the Wii:

    My problems:
    1) It’s wired.
    2) They’re not bringing back the analog L and R buttons are they? If not, the controller would feel too weird.

  • thelittlelaughingman

atran4692  Wired controllers are required for those competitive player who were asking for something like this. It’s half the reason that this thing exists.

  • StarchaserMarkellJoshua

This will be great if done correctly.

  • TheRapture

Would be nice if not for the fact that its not truly wired, because it connects to the wireless Wii remote, which is not suitable for large scale competitive play.

  • meh

thelittlelaughingman atran4692  It’s not wired. It plugs into a Wii Remote, and thus is shitty.

  • Jamie Robarge

    This is amazing!

  • Devin Christopher Norris

This I cool and all. I mean, the Gamecube controller is one of my all time faves. But let’s face it, the Wii U pro controller is better (thanks to trail and error with the Cube controller). It’s damn near perfect for competitive games with it’s roomy, symmetrical layout. It’s time to move on.

  • Tim Lanning

The Gamecube? Wtf Easily Nintendo’s worst controller ever.

  • JustTheTrick tm

Hideous. And what if taunts are mapped to the d-pad?

  • BlakeWigert

This is pointless, we already have a traditional controller, the WiiU Pro Controller.

  • Benito Aries Ram

It’s not I was hoping for, I thought it was going to look exactly like the GameCube control 🙁

  • Michael Jurado

No one said get em all lol

  • Devin Christopher Norris

Besides, I’m already buying a bunch of pro controllers just I’m covered for all fighting and racing games. Friends don’t let friends fight/race with a Wiimote…

  • plusmyles

JustTheTrick tm  That’s not the controller. There are currently no pictures of it.

  • Geoffrey Kappenberg

Pro Controller is still more consistent with the 3DS version’s controls, but this is a nice option for the change-averse.

  • Geoffrey Kappenberg

I don’t know why that image is being used, but aside from it more closely resembling a Saturn controller, it doesn’t even have Wii U branding. I’m quite certain this is not the final product… or even the product at all.

  • XDLugia

JustTheTrick tm Controls were customizable in Brawl. I bet they are in Smash 4 as well.

  • Blake Neel

I was excited.. until I saw it -_- why aren’t the “L” and “R” buttons the triggers as usual? Where’s the C stick? Where’s the Z button?
I’m very disappointed if this is real :/

    showmeyournews Joel_Patrol No D-Pad?

  • thelittlelaughingman

JustTheTrick tm  How do you know what it looks like when there is no picture of it? The pic above is the PDP Versus Fighting Pad.

  • thelittlelaughingman

BlakeWigert  Anyone who plays Smash competitively want’s a Gamecube style wired controller. This is far from pointless. >_>

  • thelittlelaughingman

@ZYC0R showmeyournews Joel_Patrol  The pic above is the PDP Versus Fighting Pad, we don’t know what the Smash controller will look like apart from that it is inspired by the Gamecube controller.

  • thelittlelaughingman

TheRapture  Again, the pic in this article is the The pic above is the PDP Versus Fighting Pad not the Smash controler. I’d guess that the actual controller will connect via USB.

  • thelittlelaughingman

@meh thelittlelaughingman atran4692  How it connects is unknown. The thing that is shitty is peoples reading comprehension when the pic in the article is clearly not the Smash controller but the The pic above is the PDP Versus Fighting Pad.

  • thelittlelaughingman

How do people think that the picture of the The pic above is the PDP Versus Fighting Pad in this article is a picture of the Smash controller? Aside from the fact that it’s clearly labeled a controller designed for the Wii, do people seriously think that is inspired by the Gamecube controller?

  • TheRapture

thelittlelaughingman TheRapture  I’m not talking about that fight pad. The article clearly states: “The Wired Fight Pad plugs directly into the Wii Remote External Extension Connector.” Which makes it a wireless device ultimately because its still connected to the wireless Wii Remote. Nowhere does it say that it’ll connect via USB.

  • TheRapture

thelittlelaughingman atran4692  No, it says that the attachment is for the Wii Remote.

  • thelittlelaughingman

TheRapture thelittlelaughingman You’re right this is not a wired controller at all. I misunderstood what was being referred to, I’m an idiot. Maybe it was just my wishful thinking. >_>

  • SpencerManigat

thelittlelaughingman BlakeWigert  It’s not even a wired controller, though. It’s tethered to a wii remote which is still wireless. It’s still pointless.

  • Max

I currently have a mayflash adapter that allows me to do that with an actual GC controller, but it may be an option for when GC controllers become harder to find.

My issue with this is that they will only work with games that support Wii classic controllers and not Wii U pro controllers, unless I am proven very wrong and they achieve an amazing technical feat. Also, it will consume a lot of batteries, and you need to plug it to a controller that no one wants. Finally, how about making it USB?

  • thelittlelaughingman

SpencerManigat thelittlelaughingman BlakeWigert @http://www.livefyre.com/profile/15583080/ It’s not pointless as it’ll almost certainly still be the prefered control method assuming it’s designed well.

It does remove half of the point though. I can only assume that they see this as a very niche device and wanted to keep all of the cost as low as possible.

You’d think that if the were doing this the they’d go all the way… >_>

  • Joe Johnson

How about just release a gamecube clone..

  • brando678543211

atran4692  they most likely won’t bring back analog L & R because even though nintendo won the lawsuit, they are too scared to get sued…. again.

  • PDPCandace

TheDCD I did post it silly! 😛

  • TheDCD

PDPCandace How’d I miss it?! Ah well. Show it to me at E3? 😀

  • PDPCandace

    TheDCD Yup.

  • Manaphy2007

i want the gcn version if and when it comes out

  • Wanderlei

    Thank you based Nintendo.

  • ChristopherKellett

That picture isn’t it, it says that’s the one that the company made for the Wii

  • joecascio2000

ChristopherKellett  That isn’t it. That is called the Wii Versus Pad that came out in 2011. Do some research.

    Cannot wait to see

  • BTBuck1

Why show the Versus pad that PDP NEVER RELEASED for the Wii? That gives this less credibility that it’ll ever come to fruition.

  • BTBuck1

@Max  from what i’ve seen almost everything supports the wii classic controllers, IF it supports the Pro controller, but not necessarily the other way around (vWii)

  • BTBuck1

joecascio2000 ChristopherKellett  that controller never actually came out, i’ve been trying to actually find one to buy since they announced it in 2011, i’ve never seen one in the wild, not on ebay, amazon, bestbuy, gamestop, google… nothing… it’s a farce.

  • BTBuck1

not to mention, confuse people… thinking “this” is what you’re releasing soon… since they’ve never actually seen this product (because it doesn’t exist)

87th I was thinking about getting that, but Smash 3DS will probably have forced out my Gamecube pad muscle memory by the time its on WiiU

  • 87th

letshugbro I’m still uncomfortable with the idea of playing Smash Bros on the 3DS, but I’ll probably get it anyway.

  • letshugbro

87th It’s pretty crazy how reliant I am on the Gamecube pad to be good at Smash Bros though

  • PDP Listen Please

Please don’t make the Joystick casing  a JAGGED HEXAGON!! this is dumb! and needs to stop!
Also can you add a second trigger to the left side, pressure sensitive like the GameCube, a surface area on top of the “C” stick that’s use able and like the main joystick, and click in joy sticks like every other modern joystick released in the last 10 years.
There it is perfect GC controller and replacement for the crappy over priced Pro controller!
Do this and I will personally buy 500 units! Ok that may not be true but I’ll buy a lot and PDP will have done something better than Nintendo ever has with controllers in the last 10 years!

Who are these Nintendo fanboys?

We specifically called ourselves ‘Nintendo Enthusiast’ for a reason. We believe you can be passionate about a game company while being honest about reality and without being blind to their faults. When you’re excited about a company, it’s hard to remain completely impartial but we try our best. If a game deserves a bad review, we’ll give it a bad review. If we think Nintendo made a bad move, we won’t hesitate to say it. However, we usually do hope Nintendo will succeed alongside the rest of the industry.
