Nintendo was founded in Kyoto, Japan on September 23rd 1889 by Fusajiro Yamauchi. The closest translation of the name means “leave luck to heaven”. The company’s original focus was on producing Hanafunda cards but by 1963 they had branched out into toys, a taxi company and a love hotel.
Since the early 1980s Nintendo’s sole focus has been on the production of video game hardware and software and to date have sold over 565m units of hardware and more then 3.4b units of software.
