It’s been what, two weeks since the last specs rumour? I don’t care any more, do you?

  • CPU: “Espresso” CPU on the Wii U has three enhanced Broadway cores
  • GPU: “GPU7” AMD Radeon™-based High Definition GPU. Unique API = GX2, which supports Shader Model 4.0 (DirectX 10.1 and OpenGL 3.3 equivalent functionality)
  • Memory: Mem1 = 32MB Mem2 = 1GB (that applications can use)
  • Storage: Internal 8 GB with support for SD Cards (SD Cards up to 2GB/ SDHC Cards up to 32GB) and External USB Connected Hard Drives
  • Networking: 802.11 b/g/n Wifi
  • Video Output: Supports 1080p, 1080i, 720p, 480p and 480i
  • Video Cables Supported: Compatible cables include HDMI, Wii D-Terminal, Wii Component Video, Wii RGB, Wii S-Video Stereo AV and Wii AV.
  • USB: Four USB 2.0 Ports
Espresso…. now I see what “Cafe” came from!

This sounds good enough to be true, not too powerful, not too weak, just about right. At this stage though I can’t say I’m bothered about the specs as I’m more excited for the Wii U than any previous Nintendo console to date! I just need one at this stage, like a monkey needs bananas!

Three enhanced Broadway cores...The Broadway CPU is based on the Gamecube, we're talking about some really old stuff there. I think G3 era, IIRC. So much for the hype that it shared the same technology as Watson, which would be Power7 based. So the statements from some developers that the GPU was a step forward for consoles but the CPU is a bit weaker than the PS360 may just be true.

Maybe it's just me, but those specs seem kind of small. I dunno, based on my poor technical knowledge, this looks like two 360's duct-taped together. Definitely more powerful than any current system, but will it be leapfrogged like the Wii was?

Yeah, tech specs bore me too. Not to mention that they can be rather insignificant compared to HOW said components are implemented. People would rattle on and on about how the original Xbox was more powerful than Gamecube. None of that mattered though. Because GC had a superior graphics processor and better tools for developers. Meaning early GC titles like Metroid Prime and RE4 looked FAR better than a large majority of Xbox games.
