Could Nintendo have acquired the mature/horror IP from Tecmo-Koei?

Several sites are reporting that Nintendo may have acquired the rights to the Fatal Frame brand, including all spin-offs. According to the copyright data for Spirit Camera, Nintendo has full rights.

The Fatal Frame series has been exclusive to Nintendo platforms since 2008′s Fatal Frame 4 which was only released in Japan. Since then Nintendo has co-developed a spin-off for the 3DS called Spirit Camera: The Cursed Memoir which will have been released world-wide once it releases in Europe next week. Tecmo has also released a remake of Fatal Frame 2 (the most popular title in the series to date), which will also be released world-wide as of next Friday.

While this would prove to be exciting news for Nintendo fans around the world, that the company has added a new mature IP to its library I wouldn’t get too excited. The evidence to support this is hardly conclusive, considering Nintendo’s close working-relationship with Tecmo-Koei over recent years, they were heavily involved with the conceptualisation of Spirit Camera, a title that uses of the 3DS’s AR abilities.
