It’s time to put on our common sense hats and examine the latest rumors. Five of them to be exact. Just as an update, in the last Rumor Roundup we discussed how it was almost definite that the Project Cars Wii U rumor was true, and in fact, since we posted the rumor, the developers confirmed that Project Cars will officially be released on Wii U.
Wii U Final Dev Kits More Powerful Than Expected
Apparently, third parties have received the final dev kits of the Wii U and are reporting that they differ a bit from earlier kits and are more powerful to boot. The architecture in the final dev kits was changed to improve the problem of overheating that was found int he original alpha kits that were sent out.
What To Believe: Our source commented on the recent rumors but kept decidedly more quiet due to the tight-lipped clamp Nintendo tries to keep on such topics. He said, of course the dev kits now perform somewhat better than previous dev kits, and that’s to be expected each time a dev kit gets updated. From his tone it seemed to me that people are taking it to be much more radical than what is to be expected from each updated dev kit. He also said that the dev kits are not absolutely final and there may still be some tweaks to the controller.
Lastly, he commented on the Nintendo Network, once more, saying that the real details will be saved for E3, because Nintendo is still taking steps from now until E3 to make sure the Nintendo Network is as fully functional as possible. They want to avoid repeating the same mistakes they made with the Wii and 3DS where functionality was slow in coming through separate updates. So, while the Nintendo Network may exist, the full plan of Nintendo won’t be revealed until E3 when launch details of the Wii U are more in place.
Official Nintendo Magazine Hints at Retro Studios Working on Star Fox
Some suggest ONM might know something more than we do. Here’s the quote:
“While some suggest this new project is likely to be a return to the Metroid franchise, we’d love to see another Nintendo hero get the retro stamp of excellence. After all, having rolled out the barrels for Donkey Kong, perhaps it’s time Retro pulled off a barrel roll of a different kind.”
What To Believe: Ugh. This is a perfect example of people dying to hang on to something, anything, that might mean their dreams have come true. It is possible Retro is working on Star Fox? Absolutely. They already have said they’re working on something that everyone wants them to work on. And we know that they’ve tried their hands twice, successfully, at reviving classic franchises. But, let’s not take a quote from a magazine out of proportion. Retro Studios, like the rest of Nintendo, is very secretive. And it’s unlikely they handed out information to ONM and then allowed them to make suggestive comments about that information. If ONM was under an NDA, they would never risk leaking information shared with them privately.
Rocksteady Working On Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for Wii U
We reported earlier on the rumors from the Paul Gale network that Rocksteady might be transitioning from the Batman Arkham series to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for Wii U and other consoles.
What to Believe: While the rumor certainly would make sense from a logical standpoint, my gut tells me that something is fishy here. It sounds like a great idea that a fan fabricated because it sounded like it made so much sense and is something that everyone would love and be thrilled about. An incredible TMNT game? Who wouldn’t want that? And it fits so well with the type of gameplay that Rocksteady excels at. So, while it fits with the conditions that would be necessary to be realistic, I still feel that something is fishy here. You can be excited for the possibility, just don’t convince yourself that this is reality just yet.
Sega All Stars Racing 2 Coming to Wii U and 3DS
A tipster told Sonic Stadium that Sumo Digital is working on a sequel to their original racing game: Sonic & Sega All Stars Racing.
What To Believe: I imagine this is true. It’s almost a logical conclusion. First of all, who would make up such a rumor? Are there such rabid fans of the original that they couldn’t help making up rumors about a sequel? No. This is the type of game that gets a sequel. It stars Sonic, it’s a racing game, and it sells well. Just like Mario & Sonic Olympic titles, this one is sure to get a sequel. I’m just not sure which systems it will be made for. I’m hoping for a 3DS game.
Soul Calibur V Being Developed for 3DS
A retail insider claimed that a pre-order listing for the game appears on tills at a major high street chain.
What To Believe: These retail listings are usually hit or miss. Sometimes they are just a mistake and sometimes they are accurate. Common sense would tell you that the 3DS has done great with fighters so far and Soul Calibur would be a perfect fit. Still, something bothers me. With Soul Calibur V coming to so many systems, why wouldn’t Namco Bandai have mentioned this at some point? Why would they hide this if all the other systems are confirmed already?
